Pygmy marmoset

The pygmy marmoset, measuring 15 cm long and weighting 85 to 140 g, is the smallest ape. It lives in flooded rainforests and forests near rivers in southern Colombia, eastern Peru and Ecuador and western Brazil.

Although it is one of the few marmosets that is able to adapt to environments deteriorated by human activity, its populations have been decreasing lately.

Description

The pygmy marmoset, the smallest ape, has greyish or brown hair on the back and orange or whitish in the underparts, and a mane around the face and nape that hides its ears. The rear limbs are longer than the front ones and all its fingers, except for the toes, have claws instead of flat nails.

Habitat

It lives in periodically flooded rainforests and in riverside forests.

Feeding

It mainly feeds on plant resins and small invertebrates, but it can also eat fruits, tender sprouts, flowers and nectar.

Reproduction

Gestation lasts for between two and three months and usually it gives birth to twins. Infants are breastfed by the mother for three months, but the father or any other member of the group can carry them.

Conduct

Mainly diurnal, the pygmy marmoset forms family groups of two to ten individuals, that move nimbly through the branches of trees. They can jump up to 5 meters to grab another branch or tree.

The biggest reported populations are always found very close to water, areas where resinous trees are abundant, the ones this species prefers the most. It has long and narrow lower incisors that help it chew bark of trees to make sap flow. They also have an enlarged cecum that increases the time it takes for them to digest vegetable substances. Their claw-shaped fingers support their weight as they move through trees on all fours and they can turn their heads 180 degrees to keep an eye on their surroundings and spot possible predators.

Status and conservation programs

Despite the recent decrease in their populations, mainly due to the deforestation of its habitat and to human capture for animal trade, it is one of the few species of marmosets that can adapt to environments that have been damaged by mankind and it is a quite common species in most of its distribution area.

Golden-headed lion tamarin

The golden-headed tamarin occupies a small part of the Atlantic rainforest of the state of Bahia, in south-eastern Brazil, although it can also be spotted in dense cocoa plantations within the same region.

Nowadays it is critically endangered as a result of the destruction of rainforests and excessive hunting.

Description

The lion tamarin is named after its prominent mane around its head. In this species, the mane is golden, as well as the tip of the tail and arms, while the rest of the body, tail and face are black.

Habitat

Rainforests of the Atlantic coast.

Feeding

Its diet is omnivorous and eats fruits, flowers, nectar and small animals, such as arthropods, worms, snails, frogs, lizards, small snakes and bird eggs.

Reproduction

Usually twins are born, which are looked after cooperatively by all the members of the group, thus reducing the mother’s fatigue and assuring a better chance for the survival of the infant.

Conduct

It has diurnal and arboreal habits, living in small groups of less than nine individuals, that defend the territory.

It sleeps within holes in big trees, the presence of which constitutes a limitation for the populations, as it affects to the distances it has to travel, in the morning to reach the feeding areas and at night to return.

It has claw-shaped nails that help it grab to the vertical part of trunks and keep stability on small branches. As in the rest of tamarins, it moves on all fours and can jump from tree to tree.

Status and conservation programs

Nowadays it is critically endangered as a result of the destruction of Atlantic rainforests, which have been reduced to small isolated patches.

Emperor tamarin

The emperor tamarin, easily distinguishable for its long white moustache, can be found in the rainforests of south-eastern Peru, north-western Bolivia and north-western Brazil.

Description

This tamarin, with greyish to brownish fur and orange tail, is easily distinguishable for its long white moustache, present in both sexes.

Habitat

Primary and secondary lowland and lower montane rainforests, occurring seasonally in flooding forests.

Feeding

It is omnivore and eats all kinds of fruits, leaves flowers, nectar, sap and tender sprouts, although it also captures insects and small vertebrates.

Reproduction

Gestation lasts for 145 days and one or two infants are born each time, exceptionally three, which are carried on the back by the father after breastfeeding, every two or three hours.

Conduct

Diurnal and exclusively arboreal, it lives in family groups of three to fifteen individuals, generally with more than one adult male and with a single reproductive female. Often, mixed groups are formed with other tamarin species, in order to help each other spot predators. While the emperor tamarin seems to be more skilled at spotting air predators, other tamarins appear more suited to detect earthbound predators. It is a territorial animal that defends territories of 30 to 40 hectares, against other groups.

Its populations are currently in regression due to the accelerated destruction of its rainforests.

Red-handed tamarin

The Red-handed tamarin is distinguishable by the contrast of its dark coat and the golden hair on its feet and hands. In fact, its scientific name refers to the mythological Midas king, who turned anything he touched into gold.

It is omnivorous and lives in family groups of up to ten individuals in rainforests, flooding forests and forest-savannahs of north-eastern Brazil, Suriname and the Guianas.

Description

Feeding

Its diet is omnivorous and can eat fruits, nectar, flowers and tender sprouts, but most of its diet consists of insects and other arthropods. Occasionally, it captures small vertebrates such as frogs and small reptiles.

Reproduction

Only one female in the group reproduces and, after 150 days of gestation, two infants are born, who are carried by the father and other members of the group, which only hand them to the mother to breastfeed.

Conduct

It lives in family groups of up to fifteen individuals, who defend the territory against other groups. It is a diurnal and very arboreal animal, who usually moves between the branches and trunks of the trees, ten to twenty meters from the ground of the rainforests.

Status and conservation programs

It is a species which is quite adaptable to environments altered by human beings, and it is commonly found in many regions of its distribution area.

Goeldi's monkey

Goeldi’s marmoset inhabits the non-flooding rainforests of western Brazil, northern Bolivia, southern Colombia and eastern Peru. Although it can sometimes be spotted on the ground, it is an arboreal animal able to jump up to 5 m among the trees.

Description

The fur of this marmoset is black in all of its body, including the face, ears, tail, hands and feet, and has a longer haired mane of the same colour. It has claws in hands and foot, unless in its toes and thumbs, where it has a flat nail.

Habitat

The Goeldi’s marmoset lives in bamboo forests and non-flooding plain rainforests, either primary and secondary, and it prefers areas with dense vegetation.

Feeding

It feeds on fruit, nectar, insects, small vertebrates and a high percentage of its diet consists of fungus, which is uncommon for marmosets.

Reproduction

Unlike most marmosets, who generally give birth to twins, this species gives birth to a single baby each time. Babies grow faster than other callitrichids. They grab the mother’s belly for the first days, but after two weeks it is already carried on the back, generally by the father, who only returns the infant to its mother for breastfeeding. It can breed twice a year.

Conduct

It lives in small family groups of five or six individuals, formed by a couple of adults and young animals. It is diurnal and, although it can sometimes be spotted on the ground, it is an arboreal animal able to jump up to 5 m among the trees. However, it frequently forages among dense vegetation in the lower parts of the rainforest.

Status and conservation programs

Nowadays it is endangered due to the deforestation of its habitat, caused by the increase of crops and pastures, as well as the construction of big infrastructures. Therefore, populations are small and isolated from each other.

Silvery marmoset

The silvery marmoset has a predominantly white fur and a dark tail. As most marmosets, apart from eating fruits, sprouts and small animals, it often feeds on different kinds of tree sap.

It inhabits the rainforests of north-eastern Brazil, in the southern area of the Amazon river. The accelerated destruction of the Amazon rainforest is causing a great decrease of its populations.

It is a diurnal and arboreal animal that moves nimbly among tree branches, thanks to its claws in its hands and feet. It lives in small family groups formed by up to ten animals, who defend the territory with scent glands or by shouting.

Status and conservation programs

Lately, its populations have been considerably reduced due to the loss of its habitat, caused by accelerated deforestation to plant crops and create pastures for domestic cattle. Although it is able to adapt quite well to partial degradation of forests, the fragmentation of its populations in small isolated groups causes considerable damage.

Habitat

It mainly feeds on fruit, nectar, leaves, tender sprouts, insects and small vertebrates.

Reproduction

Gestation, which lasts for six months approximately, is relatively long, compared to other callitrichids. Usually they give birth to twins, and less often to a single baby or up to three, which are carried by the father or other members of the group.

In general, only a female of the group reproduces during the mating season, as the rest of the females are inhibited by means of hormones.

Conduct

It is a diurnal animal that lives in family groups of up to fifteen individuals, who defend the territory against other groups.

Status and conservation programs

In the past the species was hunted to be used as pet animal or in biomedical research, but nowadays it is critically endangered, mainly because of the destruction of the forests it inhabits, which are occupied by crops and cattle pastures, and due to the subsequent fragmentation of the populations. The latest census carried out in Colombia estimate a population of no more than 6,000 animals.
