The International Day of Environmental Education originated in 1975, the year in which the International Seminar on Environmental Education took place in Belgrade. This event established the principles of environmental education within the framework of United Nations programmes. As a result, Belgrade's letter was published, which embodies the fundamental demands of environmental education.
Environmental culture emerged in the 1980s, to draw attention to the damage the planet began to suffer and develop actions to curb and reverse climate change and other phenomena that are killing ecosystems. Environmental education is a dynamic and participatory process, which seeks to awaken in the population a consciousness that allows it to identify with environmental problems both at the general (global) and at the specific level (medium where it lives). It also seeks to identify the relationships of interaction and independence between the environment (environment) and man, as well as to promote a harmonious relationship between the natural environment and human activities through sustainable development, with the to ensure the sustainability and quality of current and future generations.
It is no coincidence, then, that the Department of Education of the Zoo of Barcelona opens its doors during that year to respond to the educational need for this issue that was required of citizens. Since then, thousands of children, families, students, teachers... we have visited facts that have allowed us to pose then for the environmental culture that is so necessary.
They will change concepts, we will evolve, we will adapt to new realities, but we will always work for the education, the environment and the sustainability of our planet.
To keep working for nature!
