A tree with a straight and robust trunk, smooth grey bark that contrasts with the dark green leaves. They have a highly distinctive nervation and are rough to the touch. It produces fruit in the autumn, the hackberry, which is sweet and edible. Although originally from the Balkans and Caucus regions, it has been cultivated throughout the Mediterranean since ancient times.

Its wood is hard and elastic, which is why it was widely used to make pitchforks for working in the fields.
