Carob Tree
It is notable for its robust trunk and the branches accentuated by their scant height. The fruits, carobs, have a bituminous appearance and a sweet and floury pulp. They remain on the tree throughout the year and can be seen together with the flowers. In the wild, we find them in Mediterranean schlerophyllic scrub land with olives, mastic and strawberry. Either way, it has been grown extensively since ancient times throughout the Mediterranean and it is not known for certain if it is native to our country.
Previously, carobs were a very important crop to feed draught animals, but with the disappearance of field animals, cultivation of it declined. Recently, carobs have become used again in the food and pharmaceuticals industry.
