Barcelona City Council's Commission for Ecology, Urban Planning and Mobility gives initial approval to the Strategic Plan for Barcelona Zoo’s New Model.
At its meeting of 13 February 2019, The Commission for Ecology, Urban Planning and Mobility gave its initial approval to the document entitled “Strategic Plan for Barcelona Zoo's New Model: a look to the future”, promoted and drafted by the Barcelona Zoo's Management The agreement was published in the Butlletí Oficial de la Província [Official Provincial Gazette] of 15 February 2019.
Still pending final approval from a Full Barcelona City Council Meeting, the strategic plan is aimed at making the Zoo a centre for preserving biodiversity which actively contributes to conservation, scientific research and disseminating information on wild animals and their natural habitats, placing special emphasis on Mediterranean fauna and endangered species. Loss of habitats, over-exploitation, invasive species, pollution and climate change are just a few of the problems that seriously compromise biodiversity preservation. However, dramatic losses can still be averted if real conservation efforts are increased.
