The Zoo's Area of Education with the Grumet Project.

Zoo Barcelona

The Grumet Project has been assured continuity for another year, as part of the Barcelona Education Consortium's “Enginy” Programme, with the collaboration of the Zoo's Area of Education and the Maritime Museum (MMB).

The “Enginy” Programme is currently supervised by the Barcelona Education Consortium's Area of Innovation, Programmes and Training, which is a resource concerned with attention to diversity and inclusion, aimed at ESO students at the city's state-run secondary schools, with the general objective of favouring the achievement of basic skills through practical skill-learning linked to the reality of their environments and preventing the risk of students leaving school early. The programme offers students active participation in various educational areas and for this school year it has revived the Grumet Project.

The main aim of this educational programme is to provide students with the enriching experience and core values linked to the experience and adventure of being on board a sailing vessel, while transmitting the knowledge associated with traditional navigation and how it interrelates with the general knowledge they gain through compulsory education.

Our role consists of helping the crew members by providing knowledge of the fauna, through educational explanations and guidance on the sightings enjoyed from the boat, providing information about the biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea, contemplating the diversity of bird and marine life through observation and raising the awareness of participants about the importance of recycling, reducing waste and reusing things.

Six groups have been scheduled for this school year and the activity is carried out on board the packet boat Santa Eulalia. The first excursion took place on Tuesday 19 November, and although there was some sea movement during the voyage between Barcelona and Badalona, it was a magnificent experience for all the participants.
