Conifer with ascending branches, but that is distinct from the cypress tree (Cupressus sempervirens) as its trunk divides at a certain height and it has more open foliage. The leaves are also scale-like, but larger and darker in colour.
It is thought to have been introduced into Spain by a Majorcan Franciscan missionary, Juníper Serra, who brought them from California in the mid-eighteenth century.
