It has thick foliage due to the branches that extend horizontally. The vivid green and delicate-looking leaves stay on the tree almost until the spring. They strongly resemble robin trees and pagoda trees, but they do not have the thorns like the former or the pointed apex like the latter. The three species are also differentiated by their fruits. They have recently experienced a serious decline in their natural habitat (the regions bordering on the mountains in the northeast of Argentina) due to the encroachment of farming lands.

When we prune these trees, the chimpanzees, gorillas and giraffes in the Zoo eat the leaves and branches.
